Dierks Bentley gave us all the gift of NEW MUSIC and a TOUR ANNOUNCEMENT with the Brothers Osborne and LANco this week! (Missed the tour announcement? The video is amazing! watch it HERE)
But before we get to Dierks’ new song Woman, Amen, let’s rewind a bit to when Dierks first hit the country music scene with an instant #1 hit
Yup! The year was 2003. Apple just launched iTunes, Finding Nemo was in theaters reminding us to “just keep swimming”, and the State of California elected Arnold Schwarzenegger their Governor. On September 27, Dierks was celebrating his first radio single What Was I Thinkin’ going #1 on the Country Charts.
Like most good songs, Dierks says it all started as a true story- telling Taste of Country “I was dating a girl that was a little bit younger than me, and there was a father I had to meet every time I walked in the house. It was a little intimidating; but we had so much fun writing that song.” In other interviews, Dierks says this was a song he has been trying to top his’ entire career- which is why you still hear the song come up in his’ concert set lists.
The song means more to Dierks than just being his first #1 song. If you watched the music video above, As Dierks makes his’ escape his’ “Designated dog” Jake is riding shotgun in the car. Until his passing in 2016, Dierks told Billboard that Jake had become just as big of a celebrity as he had become over the years.
Back to the year 2018.
Earlier this month, Dierks gave us the world premiere of his latest single on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Titled “Woman, Amen”, the song is a tribute to his wife, Cass. In his’ interview with Ellen, Dierks said that “Family is always inspiring me. I think the first single shows that. It’s more about life and living, and that feeling of not just being alive but living and going for stuff. That’s what the overall album is about.”
And as for how “The Mountain” got it’s name, “I knew I wanted to make a record that touches on the west a little bit, where I’m from. I was fortunate to be asked to play the bluegrass festival in Telluride and I was on stage and I felt this amazing energy coming out of the mountains up there. There’s something about being in that landscape that really struck me in a musical way.”
