DIY Chalkboard Frame

This weekend I started working on the frame portion for what will eventually be a DIY chalkboard.

A friend of mine suggested using old magazine clippings for some of my Mod Podge projects (why didn't I think of that?!).  So I dug around the pages of some of the Rolling Stone magazines I've got stacked up in my office and went to work looking for interesting colors and designs.  Most of them came from ads, because there's a part of me that thinks I'm going to go back and re-read the articles (more likely not).

Once I had pages I liked, I cut strips out of the pages (see below).  To break up the colors of the magazine, I grabbed some old sheet music and cut the music bars up into strips like the magazine pages.

Finally - get out the Mod Podge and do work!

I applied Mod Podge to the frame, then placed the strips one by one, adding Mod Podge each time.  Magazine, then music, mag, music strip....

When I got one full side done, I also applied Mod Podge over the entire covered area.  When the frame is fully decorated, I'll apply 2 - 3 coats of Mod Podge over the entire thing (not the glass).

Finish frame with sealant and make sure to cover the glass, because you'll be painting chalkboard paint on it later.

Can't wait to post the finished project!
