Let’s face it, we can sometimes do dumb things out of convenience or being rushed- and ER Doctors are opening up about how said dumb things are leading to an influx of preventable visits to the emergency room. Here’s what’s on the list of thigs they say we got to stop doing.
- Wearing Crocs in the snow– At least one doctor on the panel said he sees a Croc-related injury at least once per week because the shoes, while comfy, don’t provide any traction on the snow and ice.
- Rushing to slide those avocados– Shocker. In our rush to make some tasty guacamole, we have begin slicing our hands open with the sharp objects while opening the avocado and removing the pit. And ER doc in Boston says it is the most frequent injury he sees each year (then again, it is Boston after all…). Bagels were also identified for causing hand injuries. Pro tip- never cut towards your hand!
- Enjoying a trampoline– My parents never let me have a trampoline as a kid, and this is probably why. the doctors referred to is as a “broken bone factory”, and that a majority of those injuries happen when a large number of people are jumping together.
- Petting every dog you see– and no, not because your hand hurts from never being able to stop petting said dogs. Doctors remind us that not every dog is friendly, and dogs who have been through trauma may very well have more bite than bark. Literally. Turns out 85% of all animal bites require medical attention. Always check with the pet’s owner before petting!
- Brushing off symptoms– “it’s just a cough/cold/fever…” Most of us have been there, done that, bought the t-shirt. Doctors say when it comes to sudden, severe symptoms, that time is of the essence in most situations, and that going to the ER is usually the best course of action.
- Not wearing a helmet– sports, motorcycles, bikes, you name it. There are over 8,000 cycling related injuries each year that doctors say could have been less impactful, if not completely prevented, if the person was wearing a helmet
