Hasbro has announced a new version of the beloved, enraging game of Monopoly that is set to hit store shelves this summer- and the paper money will be missing from the box. Properties will now be purchased and rent will be paid through a free mobile app.
In their announcement at the New York Toy Fair, Hasbro revealed the latest update to modernize the game that has caused strain in family relationships and spawned questionable homemade shortcuts to speed up the gameplay. The app that players will use will handle all the money and property transactions in the game that will also feature new landmarks on the property spaces- including a dinosaur park, and a VR roller coaster.
Some parents are upset with the move, as counting the paper money, making change, and making deals helped teach kids basic math and money skills that are going away with the “tap-to-Pay” using a mobile bank card on our phones (like a lot of us do at the grocery store anyways). Others say the money is the only real fun part of a game that is mostly luck via the roll of the dice.
The new *cashless* version of Monopoly hits store shelves this summer and is expected to sell for about $25.00.
