We’ve all been there- we go to the store with our list, swear we’re going to stick to it, and then end up with all kinds of items we never intended on buying. One TikToker, Morgan Smith, has a suggestion that she says works in reducing the impulse buys- and that’s simply heading to the trash can aisle at the store before something goes in your cart.
Smith says that the purpose is to detach yourself from the initial excitement of the item and away from how it was staged in the store to make it look appealing. This gives you time to evaluate the item more objectively- read: looking at the item itself rather than the item along with everything else originally surrounding it which often times makes it look better. By doing this, Smith notes, you are allowing yourself to consider the purchase with a clear mind.
Experts also say when sticking to a list or a budget, ask yourself “do I really need this? Or do I just want it?”
